International Day of Sign Languages

International Day of Sign Languages takes place on Wednesday 23 September, to raise awareness of the importance of sign languages.

Moray Council’s updated BSL Plan is available online, focusing on making everyday life in Moray more inclusive for D/deaf people by encouraging better communication, awareness and practical steps that individuals, services and organisations can take to support the local BSL community.

Following consultation with BSL users in Moray, the plan includes actions to support families, improve access to education and employment, promote cultural inclusion and make public transport more accessible.

It also sets out how the council will work with partners to raise awareness of BSL and support training opportunities for staff and the wider community.

The plan is available in written English here, and a BSL video version is available on Viva Engage here.

If you’re interested in learning BSL, courses are available locally. Learn more via UHI here.
