Key Handler - Scottish Manual Handling Passport (Refresher)

Training and educating carers in correct methods of assessment, handling techniques and principles. This course includes a theory component carried out via e-learning and also some discussion points. The practical element to this course requires a level of fitness to participate. Suitable footwear and clothing should be worn.

Supervisory staff within Care at Home, Day Services and Residential Services.

Learning Outcomes

After attendance at this training participants can expect to:

  • Assess the competency of staff members who assist service users in safer people handling
  • Support staff within their service area in safer people handling
  • Have knowledge and understanding of current health and safety legislation, council health and safety policies and the impact of these on all of us
  • Have knowledge and understanding of the structure and functions of the spine. The causes of back pain and how to minimise injuries.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of the risk assessment process. Have the experience of completing a risk assessment form.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of the safe principles of moving and handling. Have knowledge and understanding of condemned lifts and unsafe practice
  • Have knowledge and understanding of a safe environment and how an environment can be re-arranged to increase safety and reduce risk of injury.
  • Use a mobile hoist, stand aid hoist, sliding sheets, handling belt, and other small pieces of equipment.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of several safe moving and handling techniques and be able to carry out these techniques to a recognised standard.
