Safer Internet Day
Safer Internet Day is a global day of action that brings people together from more than 180 countries to raise awareness of online safety and work towards a safer internet.
This year the day of focus is Tuesday 11 February and you are being encouraged to consider how you can create a better internet where everyone is empowered to use technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively.
With the purpose being to promote a safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, it’s a day to raise awareness about online safety issues such as cyberbullying, social networking, digital identity and the importance of digital literacy. You can play your part by having conversations with youngsters, parents, teachers, colleagues and policymakers on how to safely, responsibly and positively use digital technology.
The digital world touches every aspect of our lives yet are we aware of the very real dangers of the online world. At Moray Council we are trying to support you, through the provision of guidance in the Moray Council Computer Use Policy and by building cyber security knowledge and resilience across the workforce via training on themes such as phishing and password protection. In addition, we are encouraging you to question whether something that looks too good to be true is likely to be a scam, and we want to remind you that everyone should be free from abuse when using online platforms. If you are unsure of anything you receive digitally, it is best to ask or check with others. Internet safety will be more successfully tackled when people come together to combat fraudsters.
So, take the time on ‘Safer Internet Day’ to consider how safe you are online - do you need to change your passwords or learn more about scams and the role of AI in increasing the risks?
Finally, if you do experience anything online that is abusive, negative or upsetting, it is important to report it to the ICT Helpdesk.
