International Day of Women and Girls in Science

This week, we celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science—a time to recognize the incredible contributions of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). These fields have often been male-dominated, but more women and girls are now making their mark, helping to shape the future of innovation.

As we celebrate their achievements, we must also encourage the next generation to explore STEM and feel confident in their abilities.

One exciting initiative helping to do just that is the Early Years STEM project, part of the Moray Growth Deal. This project introduces children aged 3-8 to science, technology, engineering, and maths at an early stage, sparking curiosity and confidence in these subjects.

Research shows that introducing STEM early can help close gender gaps, making sure that both boys and girls see themselves as future scientists, engineers, and innovators.

Phase One:
The project has reached a big milestone with plans underway for an Early Years STEM Discovery Centre and Community Learning Hub, hosted at Elgin Library in Cooper Park. This space will offer interactive exhibits, workshops, and activities to make STEM exciting for young learners.

In addition to the Discovery Centre, a mobile STEM unit will also bring STEM learning to schools across Moray, ensuring all children, including those in remote areas, have access to engaging experiences and classroom resources. The project will also provide outreach materials for schools to use in their own classrooms, supporting teachers and educators as they introduce STEM concepts to their students.

Construction of the STEM Discovery Centre is set to begin later this year, with an expected opening for the 2025/26 academic year.

Phase two:
The second phase of the Early Years STEM project will extend the reach of engagement and expand the offer throughout Moray, with further hubs planned for Forres and Buckie.

Information on phase two plans will be shared when proposals are further developed.

Empowering the Next Generation
The project also aims to break down barriers that can discourage young girls from pursuing STEM, creating a more inclusive and diverse future for these industries.

Encouraging the future of STEM, International Day of Women and Girls in Science reminds us how important it is to support young people in STEM. By creating opportunities for children to explore science and technology from an early age, we can inspire the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders.

Let’s continue to encourage curiosity and build a future where every child feels confident in STEM.
