Are you a role model? Be a decent one

We all influence the people around us, often without realising it. That’s the message behind Police Scotland’s That Guy campaign, which encourages men to think about the example they set and the role they can play in preventing violence against women and girls.
First launched in 2021, That Guy challenged men to reflect on behaviours and attitudes towards women, including the link between sexual banter, harassment and sexual violence. The campaign has since developed to focus increasingly on the positive influence men can have on one another by challenging unacceptable behaviour and setting a better example.
You are a role model
The 2026 campaign carries a simple message: “You are a role model. Be a decent one.”
Whether you’re a brother, cousin, friend, colleague or simply someone another person follows online, your words and actions can help set the standard for others. The campaign stresses that being a positive role model isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making small, positive choices and being willing to speak up when something isn’t right.
Research highlighted by the campaign found that 94% of men in Scotland agree that men have a part to play in reducing sexual violence against women, while 67% said seeing more men speak out against inappropriate behaviour towards women would make them feel more confident to do the same.
Speaking up doesn’t have to mean starting an argument. That Guy suggests approaches such as having a quiet word with someone privately, sending them a message or checking in with them later when emotions have settled. The emphasis is on being honest and explaining why a comment or behaviour is harmful, rather than turning the conversation into a confrontation.
The campaign also provides information and resources on topics including consent, masculinity, misogyny, social media and how to challenge inappropriate behaviour.
