Celebrating the Joy of Reading: World Book Night
Every year on 23 April, book lovers around the globe come together to celebrate World Book Night, an annual event dedicated to spreading the love of reading and making books accessible to everyone.
Founded in the UK in 2011 by The Reading Agency, World Book Night is held on the same day as UNESCO’s World Book and Copyright Day, and it honours the power of books to inspire, educate, and connect people from all walks of life.
Unlike World Book Day, which often focuses on children and schools, World Book Night targets adults and less frequent readers. It aims to ignite a lifelong love of reading by giving away thousands of specially chosen books in hospitals, shelters, libraries, and community centres.
Reading for pleasure has been linked to improved mental health, better communication skills, and greater empathy, making World Book Night not just a literary celebration but a campaign for well-being and social inclusion.
Whether you're sharing your favourite book with a friend, joining a reading group, or simply curling up with a new novel, World Book Night is the perfect time to reconnect with the joy of reading - and to help someone else do the same.
