Recycle Week 2024
Recycle Week 2024
Recycle Week is an annual event that aims to promote recycling and encourage people to recycle more often and more of the right things.
During last year’s recycle week Zero Waste Scotland discovered that more than half of waste disposed of could have been recycled.
Their campaign ‘Don’t let it go to waste’ champions all the efforts we make to recycle in Scotland, whilst also making the point that we very often fall at the final hurdle.
They have a handy digital Recycling Sorter tool which allows you to make sure you’re putting the right things in the right bins and not letting things go to waste.
International E-Waste Day
This year International E-waste Day fittingly falls within Recycle Week.
This is an opportunity to reflect on the impact of E-Waste (electrical waste) and on the importance of improving its collection, treatment and recycling.
New research from Recycle Your Electricals found that we have a staggering £266 million worth of copper, hiding in the unwanted electricals in our drawers or lost to the bin. That’s enough to provide 30% of the copper needed in our green future — or build 1,240 Statues of Liberty!
Taking actions – even small ones – to improve the circularity of electronic equipment is therefore key.
Last year we introduced an electrical recycling scheme where all staff can bring their end-of-life electrical and electronic products to the office for recycling.
You can bring in and bin basically anything with a battery, plug, or cable. These can be recycled and turned into new things — from children’s playgrounds to life-saving equipment. Things like your old headphones, chargers, kids’ toys, electric toothbrushes, and anything else with a plug, battery or cable can all be recycled and turned into something new.
Boxes can be found at the Greyfriars Street entrance to HQ and the Glover Street entrance to the Annex. They will be identifiable with posters so you won’t miss them.
Services can also request a bin in their department by emailing our Waste Policy Officer Ally Gordon at ally.gordon@moray.gov.uk.
