Local and Community History Month

Every May, Local and Community History Month invites people across the UK to explore and celebrate the stories, places, and people that have shaped their communities.

In Moray, this is a perfect opportunity to uncover the rich tapestry of local heritage - from ancient Pictish stones and historic kirks to tales of fishing villages, distilleries, and wartime airfields.

Organised by the Historical Association, the month aims to promote awareness of local history and encourage involvement in preserving it. Schools, libraries, museums, and community groups across Moray are encouraged to take part by hosting exhibitions, walking tours, talks, and intergenerational storytelling events.

Local and Community History Month also encourages residents to share their own family histories, photographs, and memories, helping to build a fuller picture of life in our towns and villages over time. Projects like history recordings, heritage walks, and community archives play a key role in capturing voices and stories that might otherwise be lost.

By taking part in Local and Community History Month, we not only honour the past but also strengthen our sense of place and identity. It's a chance for people of all ages to connect, learn, and take pride in the history that makes Moray unique.
