LGBT+ History Month

LGBT+ History Month runs throughout February every year with the aim of increasing the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) people, their history, lives and experiences.

It's an opportunity to connect and reflect on the past and present of the LGBT+ community, celebrate LGBT+ culture and progress towards equality over time, and to explore what the lessons of history can teach us for the future.

Last September saw Moray stage its very first Pride - a celebration of people coming together in love and friendship to show how far LGBT+ rights have come, and how in some places there's still work to be done. The event received the support of Elected Members, who highlighted the challenges too many people in Moray still face in openly living their lives.

As a council, we are committed to promoting equality and valuing diversity:

  • as an employer and as colleagues
  • in the services we provide
  • in partnerships and relationships with our communities
  • in the decisions we make

The theme of LGBT History Month 2023 is ‘Behind the Lens‘, celebrating LGBT+ people’s contribution to cinema and film and recognising the work behind the lens of everyone from directors and producers to costume designers and make-up artists.

At a time when LGBT+ lives and rights continue to make the news, we are all encouraged to look beyond the headlines and listen to LGBT+ people and learn from their lived experiences.
