Keep safe this summer
We're all about getting out and enjoying what Moray has to offer over the summer, but we also want to make sure everyone is safe. We're supporting colleagues in various agencies across the summer months to help raise awareness of safe practices. Have a look at their campaigns to make sure you're enjoying fun in the sun safely.
Water safety: We're sharing water safety and drowning prevention tips from RNLI, Water Safety Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and HM Coastguard regularly on our social media channels. We're also part of a new local partnership approach to water safety as part of a national initiative following drowning related tragedies in recent years. Keep an eye out for these @MorayCouncil on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. https://www.watersafetyscotland.org.uk/
Sun protection tips: NHS Inform have plenty tips on keeping cool, preventing sunburn and how to treat sun related issues here: https://www.nhsinform.scot/campaigns/summer-health.
Wildfires: Here in Moray we have a unique micro-climate that often means we have dry spells with windy conditions in the summer - making it ideal for wildfires to spread. You'll see us sharing the risk map when we stray into high risk territory, which is often over the summer months. Make sure you know how to avoid starting, spreading or being affected by wildfires: https://www.firescotland.gov.uk/your-safety/outdoors/wildfires/.
BBQs: Who doesn't love a BBQ when the sun appears? Just make sure you're BBQ-ing safely, particularly if you're not doing it at home. Storing your BBQ safely is just as important as being careful when it's lit - have a look at these tips for more information: https://www.firescotland.gov.uk/your-safety/outdoors/summer-safety/barbecues/.
Littering: We know how stunning Moray is and how annoyed we get when we see piles of litter lying around. We can all take steps to prevent this by taking our litter home with us if we've been out and there are no bins in the area. Cairngorms National Park in particular asks us to keep this magnificent asset clean and tidy - they also ask us not to light BBQs or fires but to use camping stoves instead if we're in the Park. Find out about wild camping and more in the Cairngorms here: https://cairngorms.co.uk/discover-explore/enjoying-the-park/outdoor-access-advice/
