Scottish Men's Sheds Association Funding Blow
A petition has been started to persuade the Scottish Government to reverse its decision to stop its core funding support for The Scottish Men’s Sheds Association (SMSA).  The Association is a member of Unforgotten Forces partner, having been welcomed into the partnership in recognition of the purpose and camaraderie ex-servicemen can gain from being involved in Men’s Sheds.

Jason Schroeder, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the SMSA, said: “We were shocked that our core funder, the Scottish Government, has stopped our funding from April next year. This decision has already impacted on the services we can deliver as we are now having to divert all of our efforts into exploring alternative funding.”

Kinross and District Men’s Shed’s Chairman David Conner said: “The SMSA has been a wonderful support and a great centre of information and advice. Without the SMSA, it is safe to say, we and some other local Sheds would not exist without their help steering us in the right direction—through the obstacles and bureaucracy that is thrown at you especially when starting something new— and enabling us to become self-sufficient.”  Watch Jason’s video appeal  Sign the petition

Changes at the Top

There’s been movement among the shakers leading some of the Unforgotten Forces partner charities.  Fares4Free welcomed Marie Crombie as its new CEO.  Brian Sloan announced his intention to step down as Age Scotland Chief Executive.  Karen Moore took the helm at Scottish Older People’s Assembly as its interim coordinator, replacing Caroline Clark.

Punch up at Erskine

Members at Erskine’s Reid Macewen Activity Centre have been enjoying fantastic new gym facilities, made possible by a £25,761 grant from the Veterans Foundation.  The equipment includes squat and mobility stations, punch bag, skiing, rowing and cardio equipment, weights and selection of medicine and slam balls. These are designed to maintain functional fitness focusing on performance as opposed to muscle size.

The request for the gym came directly from the members.  Many had experienced challenges when making use of public facilities, which do not often cater for amputees or physical disabilities and can be overwhelming for someone living with PTSD.  More about the Activity Centre

Partnership Working Helps Veterans with Sight Loss

Sight Scotland Veterans Independent Living Team is out and about attending events within local communities throughout Scotland.  Independent Living Officer Anne Garry recently visited the Erskine Reid MacEwen Activity Centre to offer support to veterans experiencing sight loss.   She met Jim, for whom cataracts were affecting his sight and quality of life. Anne said: “Jim was experiencing very dry eyes, giving him difficulties in sunlight and windy conditions. We were able to supply anti-glare glasses for when he is bowling and, to help with reading print, a task lamp that makes the most of any remaining vision as it is well designed for preventing unwanted glare.” Jim is now receiving tailored support from Sight Scotland Veterans to help him to live independently with sight loss.  More about Sight Scotland Veterans

The rising cost of living is expected to have a major impact on many older people. Age Scotland has been reporting on this unfolding story, including a looming rise in the energy price cap, and pension increases being outstripped by rising prices. The charity welcomed the Chancellors support package for lowest income pensioners. However with many of the measures being paid directly to those already claiming social security benefits, it is vital that all eligible for benefits such as Pension Credit receive it. Both Age Scotland and Armed Services Advice Project offer free benefits checks for older members of the ex-service community. Age Scotland also an online benefits calculator and publishes a suite of free benefits advice guides.
