Moray Council awarded as a Cycling Friendly Employer

We have recently received an award from Cycling Scotland for our commitment to making it easier for our colleagues to get on their bikes. The award aims to encourage and support organisations across Scotland to take a leading role in ensuring that anyone, anywhere can enjoy the benefits of cycling.

Cycling allows our colleagues to maintain good physical and mental health whilst easing congestion and improving local environments across Moray. To ensure cycling is seen as a healthy and sustainable travel choice, the following is currently available to staff:

  • Secure covered cycle parking;
  • On-site male and female shower/changing facilities;
  • Pool bikes for staff to use for business travel;
  • Bicycle mileage allowance for business journeys made using their own bike;
  • Cycle to work scheme; and
  • A named Cycling Champion - Carl Bennett

As part of the award, we’ve recently created a Bicycle User Group (BUG) for staff to discuss all things cycling. This is a forum where potential, new and existing cyclists can discuss cycling-related topics, ask questions, raise issues, buddy up and support each other.

You can access the group via Microsoft Teams by searching using the team code 3rp5hpo.  If you have any questions or issues accessing the group please contact our Sustainable Travel Officer, Janet MacDonald, by emailing Janet.MacDonald@moray.gov.uk.

We look forward to exploring new ways in which we can promote cycling across Moray Council, and as covid-19 restrictions continue to ease and more of our workforce return to the workplace, we have plans to provide:

  • Bike Dr sessions on site;
  • Social lunchtime-led cycle rides;
  • Essential cycling skills training;
  • A sustainable travel events programme/calendar for staff;
  • A review of our current shower/changing facilities and existing cycle storage usage.
