Run, Hide, Tell - Staying Safe on Holiday
The summer holidays are once again upon us and Counter Terrorism Policing, in partnership with ABTA and the FCO, has relaunched the Run, Hide, Tell International campaign, which targets holidaymakers with vital safety information.
The chances of being caught up in a terrorist incident are low but sadly we have seen atrocities take place in the UK and abroad. It is important everyone stays alert and knows what to do if the worst was to happen.
Before you head off on holiday, there are three things you should do:
• Check the latest UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice for the country you are visiting
• Make sure you have adequate travel insurance – check the small print
• Watch Counter Terrorism Policing’s holiday safety film
(NB: we are aware that not everyone has access to view this at work, so please copy and paste this link into an email to watch the film at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzcldaLbYPA&t=3s)
If you find yourself in an emergency:
RUN – to a place of safety. This is better than trying to surrender or negotiate.
HIDE – it is better to hide than confront. Barricade yourself in, turn your phone to silent and use only when it is safe to do so.
TELL – Make sure you know the local emergency numbers in the country you are travelling to. In the UK dial 999 in an emergency. For all EU countries call 112.
