Well known Gaelic singer ,Mod Gold Medallist and a native of Moray, Fiona J Mackenzie, will present a ‘song lecture’ on the work and lives of folklorists John Lorne Campbell and his wife Margaret Fay Shaw. The presentation entitled “ Portrait of an Island, describes the crofting and folkloring life of the Campbells and the people amongst whom they lived in the Hebrides, in the 1950’s. The presentation will include original film footage and photography captured by Margaret in the 1940’s and 50’s, on her Graflex and Kodak still and movie cameras. This will be accompanied by original field sound recordings made in the Highlands and Islands by John Lorne Campbell in the 1940’s. Fiona will also use her own voice to illustrate the stories being told which are as relevant in Moray as they are in the Hebrides! The presentation will be in English accompanied by Gaelic song and sounds. It is a story of a lifestyle, common throughout the Highlands and Islands of the mid-20th century and features film of farming, fishing, livestock and community life. The session is free as funded through Bord na Gaidhlig.
